October 26, 2019 - October 27, 2019

PROGRAM: “The War of 1812 at Sea” A USNA School House at Sea program

DATE: 26-27 October 2019, (Date Tentative)

LOCATION: Historic London Town, Edgewater, MD

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: The USMCHC has once again been ask by the USNA Museum and History Department to be part of the instructor cadre for a unique course being offered to the midshipmen. In this one-credit course, ten midshipmen will study the War of 1812 beyond the classroom and aboard a replica War of 1812 ship. The Mids will embark on a two day sail from Annapolis to Solomons, MD and back aboard a replica tall ship (tentatively the replica of the Maryland-built privateer LYNX) where the Midshipmen will get lectures and have an opportunity to work with ship’s company. Instructors will provide hour-long learning modules about the respective academic areas during the War of 1812. The Midshipmen will camp at the US Navy Recreation Center on the evening of 22 April. While there they will receive additional lectures and hands on demonstrations. The USMCHC has been ask to provide a class on the Marine Corps role in the War of 1812. With Capt. Miller’s Company of Marines playing a key role in the 2nd Battle of Saint Leonard Creek, as well as several other engagements during the summer of 1814, the class will focus on Marine Corps tactical doctrine, both at sea on land, and its impact on the Corps’ small unit leaders.
