Film Industry Consultation
The USMCHC is often called upon to assist with both theatrical films and documentaries. Although the motion picture industry is not the Historical Company’s principal focus, we have considerable experience in this area. Services include:
- Pre-production historical and technical research.
- Assistance in material development working with the Wardrobe, Props, and Art Departments.
- Historical and Technical review of scripts.
- Training in military and technical skills of both principle actors and extras (including conducting actor “Boot Camps”).
- Production on-site military technical and historical advisement and support.
- Assistance to the Director and ADs in setting shots; choreographing scenes; and coordinating, managing, and moving large numbers of extras.
- Working as stuntmen and stunt doubles when specific military equipment is called for (such as Flame Throwers, etc.)
Recent Marine Corps related films The USMCHC has worked on include “Windtalkers,” “Flags of Our Fathers,” and “Letters from Iwo Jima,” along with numerous television documentaries. On Director John Woo’s film “Windtalkers” the MCHC provided extensive technical consultation and services ranging from pre-production research and development, script review, and technical advisement to the wardrobe and props departments, and weapons master during pre-production, during production we functioned as instructors for the principal actors and core extras. GySgt Williams acted as the onset lead Marine Corps Historical Adviser and as a stuntman during filming. In 2005 GySgt Williams, as the USMCHC senior representative, functioned as the lead historical consultant and trainer, and stunt doubled one of the principle actors on Director Clint Eastwood’s films “Flags Of Our Fathers” and “Letters From Iwo Jima.” Along with other USMCHC staff he trained the actors and extra’s, assisted with setting and choreographing scenes, coordinated and managed large numbers of extras, and acted as technical and historical advisers on set.
